Types of Dentures
San Diego, California
Dentures are used to replace teeth that are missing or have needed to be extracted. Some dentures are used to replace all teeth in the mouth, called “full dentures,” and some dentures can be used to replace multiple missing teeth while retaining some natural teeth, called "partial dentures."
In addition, there are many different types of dentures. Three of the most common types used by Dr. James Loye are:
- Conventional dentures
- Immediate dentures
- Cosmetic dentures
Conventional Dentures
Standard conventional dentures are used for patients who are missing their whole set of teeth. These dentures are specifically made to fit the patient’s mouth. The set will include a top and a bottom and the top denture will rely on suction between the denture and the roof of the patient’s mouth to keep it in place. To get a full set of standard dentures made will require several trips to the dentist for setting and fitting procedures.
Immediate Dentures
Immediate dentures are also referred to as temporary dentures. These dentures are made for the patient before their natural teeth have been extracted. These dentures are pre-fabricated, which means that they may not fit their mouth the same way that standard dentures do. Immediate dentures are not recommended for permanent use. They are best used to help reduce the pain after a full mouth extraction. Most patients need a new set of immediate dentures after about six months.
Cosmetic Dentures
Cosmetic dentures offer a more natural looking option for people who don’t want to use plastic dentures. This type of denture is actually made out of ceramic porcelain teeth. They are each individually made so that each tooth looks realistic. This form of denture typically has a more natural looking support structure that will make it difficult to tell apart from natural teeth.
If you suffer from missing teeth, dentures might be a good option for you. Missing teeth can not only affect your smile and confidence, but they can affect your overall health as well. To discuss treatment options, please schedule a dentures consultation with Dr. Loye at Carmel Creek Dental today.
