Porcelain White Fillings

San Diego Porcelain Fillings

San Diego, Poway and La Jolla, CA

The days of noticeable metal fillings are disappearing. Cosmetic Dentistry now offers Porcelain Fillings which are matched to the color of your teeth and thus are invisible.

Fillings are used to repair cavities, which are caused by the acidic excretions of bacteria. If you suspect you have a cavity, you need to see a dentist as soon as possible. Untreated cavities lead to prolonged pain, further tooth decay, inflammation, gum disease and tooth loss. This is not a pleasant scenario, but it can all be easily avoided.

Dental Bonding or Porcelain Fillings
If you do have a cavity and would like it filled with a tooth-colored substance rather than the old gray metal amalgam, you have come to a good place. We offer two types of white fillings:

  • White composite fillings – using the same substance discussed on the Dental Bonding page
  • Porcelain inlays and onlays

Both of these types of white fillings are bonded to the tooth they fill. This helps hold the tooth together and prolong its life.

Disadvantages of metal fillings

  1. Metal fillings are packed tightly into the cleaned-out cavity. They are not bonded to the tooth. They remain a separate entity inside the tooth, exerting outward pressure on the tooth’s periphery. Over time, this can weaken the tooth and even crack it.
  2. Metal fillings weaken the tooth in another way: by expanding and contracting with hot and cold substances put into the mouth. Since they are metal, they respond this way to temperature. Over time, this too weakens the tooth.
  3. For a metal filling to remain in the cavity, the tooth must be drilled out more than for just removing decay. The cavity must be shaped so as to hold the filling in. That means healthy tooth tissue is removed. In contrast, for a white filling, only the decay must be removed.

Replace your old metal fillings
We can remove your old gray fillings and replace them with Porcelain Fillings ones that will be invisible. You won’t appear to have any fillings at all, because they will match your natural tooth color so closely.
