Sedation Dentistry - Oral Conscious Sedation
San Diego, California
It is estimated that roughly 30% of the population avoids going to a dentist because of fear or anxiety. As a result of this “dental phobia”, there are people who have not seen a dentist in ten or even 20 years. Dr. Loye is registered with the state of California to practice oral conscious dentistry (OCS), and offers it as a way to help you relax in his office.
Oral conscious sedation means that you are in a deeply relaxed stated, but not completely unconscious during the procedure. You may doze off some of the time, but will still be able to answer questions and follow Dr. Loye’s instructions.
Dr. Loye understands that you may feel uncomfortable or fearful when you come in for your cosmetic dental procedure. But with oral conscious sedation dentistry, your fears can be put to rest in a calming, comfortable, and safe way.
Patients who are appropriate for OCS include those who
- Suffer anxiety when visiting their dentist
- Suffer from acute or chronic soreness of the jaw
- Cannot get numb
- Have a bad gag reflex
- Have neck or back problems
- Have a history of other health problems
Because many people complain of one or more of these problems when they visit the dentist, Dr. Loye has several ways in which to keep you relaxed. Depending on your age, anxiety level, weight, and any other underlying health problems, as well as the procedure you are getting, Dr. Loye will choose the right kind of medication to give you. You might take a pill before you come in for your procedure. If you do not feel with that, Dr. Loye can also administer nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas” to keep you relaxed. All of this is done in a safe and caring way.
Temporary Side-effects of Medication
- Retrograde amnesia
- Dry mouth
- Hiccups
The payoff is less post-operative soreness. In most cases, you will not be required to take pain medications after your procedure, and will recover more quickly with less soreness due to the relaxed state you were in with OCS.
It is because Dr. Loye believes in making your procedure as easy as possible for you that he offers OCS. No longer will you need feel fearful when walking through his doors. You will be in a safe, professional environment with a dentist who cares about your needs.
